Forklift Seat Belts - This guideline purpose is to explain the Regulation requirements for the application of driver restraints or seatbelts on lift trucks. It is the employers' responsibility to ensure that every machinery, piece of equipment and device within the workplace is selected and used rightly and worked in accordance with the manufacturer's directions.
Rough Terrain forklifts should meet the regulations of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 with regards to their maintenance, inspection, fabrication, use and design.
Mobile machinery such as side boom tractors with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS), have to have seat belts that meet the Society of Automotive Engineers safety requirements; Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If whatever mobile machinery includes seat belts required by law, the driver and subsequent passengers should make certain they use the belts whenever the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation for the reason that this can cause the equipment to become unsteady and thus, unsafe.
If a seat belt or other driver restraint is needed on a forklift.
While working a lift truck, the seat belt requirements would depend on a number of factors. Contributing factors to this determination may include whether or not the the forklift is outfitted along with a Rollover Protective Structure, the type of lift truck itself and the year the lift truck was actually made. The manufacturer's directions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.
With regards to powered industrial forklifts, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 refers to a driver restraint device, system, or enclosure. An operator restraint device, system, or enclosure is intended so as to help the driver in lessening the probability of entrapment of the torso and/or head between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The system or restraint device may consist of a seat belt, even if a seat belt is not essentially a part of such machine or system.
