How to Correctly Use a Forklift
Forklifts are material handling machines which can transport loads. Most commonly, these equipment are utilized in certain industries to move heavy materials in a wide variety of settings like warehouses, airports and supply companies. Anybody operating a forklift needs to be taught to carefully use the machine. It is critical to be totally aware of one's surroundings when driving a forklift. Lift trucks are designed to run on propane, gasoline, diesel or batteries. Typical lift trucks are common in various commercial applications and are not hard to use with proper training. The following steps outline the fundamentals of using a forklift:
1 Get familiar with all the levers which are used to move and maneuver the load from location to another place. The levers can be found to the right of the steering wheel.
2 The first lever could move the tines down and up. Pushing the lever away from your body moves them down and pulling the lever towards your body moves the tines up. Tines must always be kept close to the ground except when loading or unloading.
3 The other two levers control the tilt as well as the left/right movement of the forks. The blades are designed to tilt between 15 and 30 degrees. It is recommended that you practice prior to picking up a load. Using the second lever, push it away from you to tilt the blades forward, and pull it towards your body to tilt the tines back.
4 The third lever is moved side to side to control the movement of the forks from right to left. Simply move the lever towards where you would like the forks to move: right to move the tines right and left in order to move the tines left.
5 Cautiously approach the cargo. Lower the blades and drive forward cautiously until the forks slide under the cargo. Afterward lift the tines several centimeters by pulling the lever towards your body. If the load is top-heavy, you should tilt the forks backwards a little for balance.
6 Safe driving rules consist of slowly taking corners and honking to warn pedestrians or other employees that the forklift is approaching. Approach the place where you will be working with care. Control the levers to maneuver the cargo to where it is going. When the cargo is placed, reverse gears and cautiously back away.
7 A lift truck stops the same way as an automobile. The brake is found to the left of the accelerator. When stopped, shift the gear into "park."
